Elizabeth Castle free open day with with Lloyds Community Bank

The free Castle open day is back on!!! join us for a WWII tour or try some of the many other exciting tours. The event is completely free thanks to the sponsor Lloyds Community Bank. Full details below.

Love Your Castle this Spring and join Jersey Heritage and Lloyds Community Bank for a free day out at Elizabeth Castle. We’ll have a series of new tours for you to join, each tour takes a different look at the castle’s history, from the Occupation to the Hidden Castle, so you can explore the castle in a brand new way. There will also be Cannon Firings from our Master Gunner, dance performances from Bellissima, free abseiling sessions down the castle walls with Jersey Adventures and the chance to have a go at Archery too with the Jersey Archery Society.

The event is completely free thanks to sponsor Lloyds Community Bank.

Walking times from 10am. Please note that the Castle closes at 2pm and the last walking time to Castle is 1.15pm. Castle Ferry will operate a restricted service for disabled access only.

Tours

Tickets are available 30 mins before each tour start time. Please collect your ticket from the relevant tour desk in the PARADE GROUND, there are limited tickets for each tour. If you don’t get the chance to join the tour of your choice then there’s lots more activity going on throughout the Castle!

The Occupation Castle Tour (30 Minutes)

Tours start at: 10.15am – 11.15am – 12.15pm and 1.15pm

Meet the Island’s Occupation experts from Jersey War Tours and discover how the castle was used during the German Occupation. During this time Elizabeth Castle served as a Organisation Todt camp, an Officer cadet war-school and part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall. This tour around the German positions of Elizabeth Castle will highlight the Castle’s role in the defence of the Island and will reveal the castle’s Occupation history.

The Hidden castle Tour (30 Minutes)

Tours start at: 10.30am – 11.30am and 12.30pm

This is your chance to be some of the first people to see behind the closed doors of the castle, to discover what the spaces were used for and we’ll reveal how they may be used in the future. This tour, lead by Jersey Heritage’s Chief Executive will include a chance to get into the Canteen block and Ordnance store in the Lower Ward; and the attic and basement of the Governor’s House, the magazine on the steps behind the Queen Elizabeth Gate and the German Communication’s Room in the Upper Ward.

The Georgian Castle Tour (30 Minutes)

Tours start at: 10.30am – 11.30am and 12.30pm

Join us on this tour around the Georgian buildings on the Parade Ground and Grand Battery and its associated magazines. The current layout of Elizabeth Castle was essentially created during the eighteenth century and you can learn about life in Elizabeth Castle just as the French Revolution was about to change the map of Europe.

The Occupation Castle Tour (30 Minutes)

Tours start at: 10.15am – 11.15am – 12.15pm and 1.15pm

Castle Tales Talk (30 Minutes)

Talks start at 10.15am – 11.45am and 12.30pm

Elizabeth Castle has seen its fair share of characters, join us for an entertaining talk and to hear some infamous stories about the castle’s characters. Including,

St Helier, a well meaning wrecker;
Paul Ivy, the Queen’s Engineer;
Captain Mainwaring, the Jacobean pirate who taught Charles II to sail;
Thomas Wright, Crowell’s firemaster
The Abbé La Loutre, the French priest attacked by a soldier he tried to scalp;
Monsieur Granger, the first man to fly in Jersey
Philippe Jolin, the last man to be publically hanged in Jersey

Beyond the Castle Walls Tour (45 minutes)

Tours start at 10.30am – 11.30am and 12.30pm

For many visitors the view from Elizabeth Castle is always out over the walls, this fascinating tour takes you outside the castle walls to give an attackers view of the castle.

You’ll discover Le Havre de St Jaume and La Caûchie St Jaume – the harbours, the low water landing stages and the remnants of the 1870s and 1880s breakwater works with an in-depth tour from local expert Doug Ford.

Elizabeth Castle Tours (1 hour)

Tours start at 10.45 and 12.45

Join one of our classic Elizabeth Castle guided Tours and discover the whole castle and its history in this introduction to the castle from an expert guide.

Barracks Hospital Tour (30 Mins)

Tours start at 10.15am – 11.15am – 12.15pm and 1.15pm

Step behind the closed doors of the Georgian Military Hospital and discover a unique space normally closed to the public.

Hear the history of the hospital and the experience of it’s patients and staff. This special building is unique in the British Isles and you can find out about our plans to open this space up to the public once again.

Bushcraft Tour (45 Mins)

Tour starts at 1pm

Take a walk on the wild side with guide John Fox from Jersey Adventure who’ll teach you some basic bush craft skills
