A breast cancer nurse is cycling solo non-stop for 24 hours in the hope of raising £20,000 for patients with the disease.
Kathleen Hirani is riding a six-mile loop between St Aubin and Le Frigate continuously from 8am this morning – even pedalling during meals.
Four local charities – Macmillan Jersey, After Breast Cancer, Family Nursing & Home Care and Jersey Hospice Care – will all benefit from the funds raised.
The mum of three who cares for people at the hospital says she sees daily the effect the illness has:
“As well as physical support, [the Health Department] provide a lot of psychological support, but they need a lot more help than we can provide. Having these charities around gives us somewhere to signpost people to. Without them, there’d be a lot of ladies left feeling alone and vulnerable.”
Over the next 24 hours, Kathleen will only get off the bike for occasional comfort breaks. She’ll even be eating her meals whilst pedalling on a static bike.
The six-mile loop along Victoria Avenue will be cycled 46 times in the time, equating to 276 miles on the bike.
