Politicians to vote on same-sex marriage in Sark

Politicians in Sark are set to vote on allowing same-sex marriage on the island.

The change would bring Sark in-line with Alderney, Guernsey and Jersey who already allow same-sex weddings.

Sark’s Policy and Finance committee Chairman, Conseiller Peter La Trobe-Batemans, has tabled the proposition after being approached by several individuals about adopting same-sex marriages on the island.

The Conseiller argues that preventing gay marriage would be in contravention of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights by the European Court of Human Rights.

It is also hoped that a move towards allowing same-sex marriage would boost tourism and bring more money to the island.

A vote on the proposals is set to take place on Wednesday 2 October.

Paul Amorgie, a hotelier who hosts weddings at the Stocks Hotel, believes it would be a positive step for legislation to be passed.

I think it’s a really excellent move in the right direction. Sark is a wonderful popular destination for weddings, it always has been, hopefully always will be.The fact that that’s now going to incorporate the LGBT community moving forwards I think has got to be really good news for Sark.
