Toto’s hit song Africa is set to “keep going for all eternity” thanks to a sound installation set up in the world’s oldest desert to play the track on loop.

Namibian-German artist Max Siedentopf is behind the installation in the Namib Desert, which consists of six speakers attached to an MP3 featuring Africa, and Africa only.

The multiplatinum-selling soft rock classic, released in 1982, has enjoyed something of a resurgence in the digital era, becoming one of the most-streamed songs of 2017 with just under 18 million plays in the UK.

In a post entitled Toto Forever on his website, Mr Siedentopf says he is paying tribute “to probably the most popular song of the last four decades: Toto – Africa”.

The creation “runs on solar batteries to keep Toto going for all eternity”, he says.

It is not the first time Africa has been played on loop.

In September, a music venue in Bristol played the song for 12 hours straight to raise funds for charity.

It came after a Burger King in Camden, north London, promised to play the track “all day” following a Twitter campaign.

And for those who can’t get out to Namibia just yet, you can relive the magic here…
