The upcoming Youth Assembly in Jersey will go ahead, despite planned teachers strikes.
The Education Department say they don’t see any safeguarding issues arising as teachers don’t have to accompany the sixth form students to the States Chamber.
Teachers at seven secondary schools in Jersey plan to strike on March 19th, following a rejection of the latest States pay offer.
The event, on the same day, gives young participants the opportunity to question Ministers and Assistant Ministers about a range of topics – from the promotion of Jèrriais to rules governing blood donors – and to learn about the way Jersey’s parliament works.
Given the weeks of effort which the students have put into the Assembly, it would be incredibly disappointing to have to cancel at this late stage, particularly as we would struggle to identify an alternative date, with exams looming and also Ministers’ limited availability.
